I find that during the year I read A Christmas Carol at Christmas time and The Great Gatsby in the summer. Though this is not officially the summer yet, I feel in May with the temperatures teasing me in the 70s and 80s, I feel previews to the summer already.

To me, The Great Gatsby is not just a good story, it is a work of art. It was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a man who struggled with alcoholism and personal tragedy and somehow managed to produce this great piece of writing that in some instances reflects his own struggles and unhappiness.
He grew up in the mid west. He served in World War Two and met the love of his life in the south while stationed there before going overseas. After the war, he went to New York to make his fortune. He wrote a book This Side of Paradise and became not only rich but famous. He married his sweetheart and they traveled among the rich and famous of the times. They moved to Europe and she had an affair. He was struggling to write a novel that would later become Gatsby but continued to write lesser pieces of writing to support his lifestyle hampered by a free spending upper class wife and alcoholism. She named her unborn child after him expecting a son. Instead she had a daughter and nicknamed her Scotty after the child’s father. She suffered a nervous breakdown and …

@ Jamie- that is a great list. Wow! I have read or own several of those books. Terrific books. I have seen the movie “Lolita” but never read the book. I think that Stanely Kubrick took some poetic license with adapting Lolita for the movie. Some of it was forced upon him by the censors. For instance, the daughter was underage in the book but is 18 in the movie. Actually Sue Lyon was 14 when she made the movie. Kubrick’s revenge. He is forced to make the character above legal age but then he casts a minor in the role of Lolita. Hahaha! I have seen Eyes Wide Shut too but that would not be on the 100 top list of literature.

My brother is addicted to meth and is also suicidal. His common law wife found out that he was having an affair with another women who is also addicted to meth. Since then my brother talks about killing himself and he has a loaded gun that he carries in his pocket. His wife has told me that he has held the gun to his chest and head in front of her threatening to kill himself for what he has done. He also says that he is obsessed with this “other women” and can’t let her go. They apparently have had a very volatile relationship and this other women knows how to push his buttons. He seems even more obsessed with her since he found out she has another boyfriend. She continues to call my brother and even met him at a motel last monday. My brother said they did some meth together then somehow she drugged him and stole his car (the car he was driving belongs to our dad). Since then he is delusional and even more suicidal. During one episode he kept calling his wife by the other girls name.

Julio was last arrested at 30 years old. Born and raised in Clovis, New Mexico, he moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico, when he was 18, where he graduated High School and then began college.

The state tried him for “attempt to commit capital murder on PD”, but fortunately the video showed that he swerved to avoid hitting the officer. Given a five year sentence for getting out of restraint from handcuffs, he did 2.5 years and was paroled in 2005. Julio maintained sobriety through his parole sentence but relapsed and moved back to NM. He lost his wife who went back to Dallas with his second son.

He was rearrested and sentenced for possession of aerosol, misdemeanor attempt to use it for a euphoric feeling. He was busted inhaling behind a housing project in a vacant yard.

Once in the system, again, the social worker for the public defenders office referred him to a new criminal and drug rehabilitation program in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Second Chance Program was opened by Rick Pendery, who is the national executive director of the Second Chance Centers, after having a high rate of success running the Second Chance Program in state prisons.

Julio has been taking part in the program for six months, he explains what a difference it has made in his life, “Everything has changed. My self confidence is restored, I have self esteem. I no longer see myself as a loser. I have potential to learn, my hunger to get educated has returned. Education is the one thing that can’t be taken away from a person. I want to go back to school. I believe that the best counselor is one who has been through it. I want to help others. I also want to be a soccer coach. And I like to use words, I might want to do something in the field of English literature.”

The Second Chance Program consists of four core modules, the Drug Rehabilitation Module, the Learning Skills Module, the Self Respect Module all of which are delivered in a secure residential facility, on an intensive eight-hour a day, six-day a week course schedule over an average of six to eight months. The Reintegration Module which includes Life Skills is continued post release to ensure their successful reintegration into the community as a productive citizen.
