To paraphrase Stanton Peele, we are set on proving that mental illness is primarily biological despite our consistent failures to date to substantiate this. Big Pharma, anyone? There is no conclusive evidence whatsoever that there is anything physical anomalous about say, schizophrenics, and interestingly, the onset of schizophrenia typically occurs during the peak of one’s physical prowess.

If diseases of the mind were literally diseases of the brain, wouldn’t psychiatry be swallowed by neurology? Is mental illness a metaphor we have taken literally?

Medical pot burns users in custody fights
MATLOCK — Nicholas Pouch runs an organic farm and a glassblowing studio on a 20-acre spread in southwest Washington’s timber country. How can I protect my father from his wife re: medical decisions?
My father has been in the hospital since the 2nd of January. There is various medical problems including: Prostrate cancer, possibly alcoholism, dehydration & malnutrition and various other maladies. I know for sure that my dad does NOT want to be there and his wife wants him to go to a rehab center (I believe for alcoholism). He has been sedated and in restraints for a couple of weeks. He has tried to leave the hospital but his wife is controlling what happens. He has asked me to contact a lawyer to begin divorce proceedings. He says he wants to live but on HIS terms, not on those his wife chooses for him. Tonight they transferred him to a geriatric psych facility against his wishes. My brother is boarding the plane now to get out there. All I care about is making sure that his wishes are granted because ultimately that is all that is important.

Help, please. We know that the wife has primary decision making power by virtue of their marriage but he does not want her to make decisions for him. What can we, his kids, do to make sure that we can have her rights superseded? I talked to a lawyer today but he was somewhat reluctant to get involved because of the muddy issues with the wife. There was also some talk about the hospital not letting him be released. So my questions are:
1. Can we get a power of attorney so that we can make the medical decisions (do what he wants) for him, instead of his wife?
2. Can we just walk him out of the hospital without the hospitals consent?

This is in Arkansas.
Any other information that you might have that you might have come across because of your own experiences would be soooo helpful. Thank you so much.
Douglas: Thank you so much for your answer, but I do believe he has the right to live out his life the way he wants. I would NEVER agree to restrain someone like that. He has detoxed now for about 20 days and I’m not convinced that alcohol is as big of a program for him as his wife says (not my mother, his 2nd wife). I just don’t think anyone has the right to choose for how someone else should live out the rest of their days. By-the-way, no inheritance so that is not a factor in my decisions (he’s leaving it in a trust for the grandkids education).

I was applying for private medical insurance and got the 2000 questions by the insurance company. All of this was on the phone. No written consents. My husband never even talked to them. They pulled up his medical history somehow on the Web and gave me all the details asking if I was aware of why he recieved certain treatments. One treatment involved shingles and he was prescribed Valtrex. This same drug also treats genital herpes. I knew why he was prescribed this medication, but if I had not, and if it was for genital herpes, it would have been quite a shock for me considering this prescription was 5 years after we were married. My question is are they violating HIPAA and do I need to file a complaint? It makes me very uncomfortable to work with this company after this.
My husband actually did not know I was applying for new coverage. I currently cover our family and was getting quotes from other companies. He never signed anything, never talked to anyone, nothing. The thing that bothers me is if this was reversed and my husband was the insurance prividor in our family and he decided to shop around. I have not had an abortion, but what if I had even before we were married or after and had not told him, but they disclosed this to him without my consent. Same thing, but backwards. Makes you think about who has our medical records and what they can do with them and how little control you have over them.

Although you may access funds in your Health Savings Account to pay for tax-qualified medical expenses, not all tax-qualified expenses are covered benefits under your health insurance. (example: dental treatment and dentures, vision screening and eyeglasses, vitamins and non-prescription medication, etc.) While you may receive a tax benefit on these items, they are not covered by the health insurance plan and do not accumulate toward your annual medical plan deductible.

Here are more eligible medical expenses to be considered. –  Acupuncture, Alcoholism treatment, Ambulance, Artificial limbs or prostheses, Artificial teeth, Birth control pills (by prescription), Braces, Breast reconstruction surgery, Car – special hand controls or equipment to accommodate a disabled person, Chiropractor, Christian Science practitioner, Contact lenses and cleaning solutions, Crutches, Dental treatment, Dentures, Dermatologist, Diagnostic devices (blood sugar test kit), Drug addiction treatment, Eyeglasses, Fertility enhancement, Guide dog or assistance animal, Hearing aids and batteries, Home care, Home improvements to accommodate a disabled person, Hospital services, Lab fees, Laser eye surgery, Lead paint removal, Lodging (away from home for prescribed outpatient care), Long-term care premiums (certain limits apply), Long-term care services, Nonprescription medications, Nursing home, Nursing services (including board and meals), Ophthalmologist, Optician, Optometrist, Organ transplant (including donor’s expenses), Osteopath, Oxygen and oxygen equipment, Physician services, Podiatrist, Prescription medications, Psychiatric care, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Special home for the mentally retarded, Special school costs for the handicapped, Sterilization, Surgery, Stop-smoking programs (physician prescribed),Telephone or TV equipment to assist the hearing impaired, Therapy, Transportation (primarily for and essential to medical care), Vasectomy, Weight loss programs to treat an existing disease, Wheelchair, X-rays.

Sometimes with even the best P.P.O plans there will be benefit limitations in certain areas to help avoid run away spending. Think about it, if they don’t put a benefit maximum of say 20 physiotherapy visits per person per year, you will get the occasional therapist who, in an attempt to make as much money as possible, will book a patient for 30 – 40 visits when 15 – 20 would have been sufficient. I understand that folks don’t want to hear that kind of thing but, this is what drives up those health premiums and makes coverage harder to afford. The money has got to come from somewhere. So at least with an H.S.A those visits would be deductible.

For some this is the beauty of an H.S.A over a traditional PPO plan. You have one shared family deductible with an H.S.A, whereas with a P.P.O you would have a “2 person family aggregate maximum,” or put in layman’s terms. Up to 2 people per insured family could encounter a deductible and or a coinsurance maximum depending on their P.P.O plan. Actually some P.P.O plans have 3 deductibles per family, but 2 is the industry norm. With a P.P.O plan you can deduct your premiums but with an H.S.A you can deduct not only the premiums but also any monies put into the optional H.S.A account (which can accumulate each year until age 65) and those monies remain tax deductible if the money taken out once deposited is used for medical expenses. I have an H.S.A currently for my wife and me.

Medical effects of too much sex

Is it well documented that too much sex (e.g. overdose of pornogaphy/masturbation or sex with a high frequency) can cause an overdose of brain pleasure chemicals and affect normal brain function? For instance is this more or less parallel to what happens in drug addiction?

Is this an argument against (too much) pornography? Yes.

The poor afflicted creatures are caled ‘teenage boys’.

The results speak for themselves.

But then, to a teenage boy, even linoleum counts as pornography. </xander> Anything that involves a lot of endorphines can become addictive.

“Too much” sex can also result in reduced sex drive and sore “parts” as well, but that’s kinda obvious. sex is good for the prostate gland. when you’re older, you should be having sex quite frequently. if not, your wife is trying to kill you. Overdose of everything is detrimental. The Pleasure mechanism is based on the chemicals called neurotransmitters and the sensitivity of their respective receptors.

Usually in oragasmic pleasure response, The neuro transmitter called Dopamine is involved. Also other chemicals involved are Oxytocin and Vasopresin. These chemicals usually stimulate the pleasure response in the emotional part of brain OR lymbic system. Also the memory links are created due to the effect of these chemicals on the cells called Astro-cytes, which guide the axon to form a new link. As we all know the memory functions on the basis of neuronal linkages.

The Threshold of stimulation is one of the important facet of every biological pathway. There are always positive and negative feedback mechanisms involved in controlling almost every bio-chemical process going on in the body.

Thus Over-sex causes extra stimulation of this pathway and increases the threshold level rquired for the stimulation of that pathway. that is, If level ‘ X ‘ stimulus is required for the stimulation of pleasure pathway OR pleasure cascade in brain in terms of sex, then that level increases to ‘ Y ‘, which is usually higher than ‘ X ‘.

Secondly, the negative feedback of the brain, especially, hypothalamus-pituitary-penis pathway is affected.
In normal circumstances, the sexual stimulus causes the hypothalamus to secrete Vasopressin which causes the blood vessels in penis to first relax and then contract, thus trapping the blood in the penile tissue, making it erect. After certain level of mechanical movements, this stimulation reaches to a certain level which inturn causes hypothalamus to secrete oxytocin. It causes the feeling of Orgasm and cause the smooth muscles in testes and penis to contract rhythematically. At the same time, the neurotransmitter called Dopamine is released in the brain’s lymbic system area.
All these chemicals working together in hormony and right order result in experiancing of Orgasm.

Over stimulation of this pathway causes temporary decrease in sensitivity of sexual stimulus. It is evident in Males with the lapse period after ejaculation.
This is one of the mechanism which is affected by too much of sex. The period of latency increases.

Thirdly, too much of Sperms are wasted. One sperm takes about 72 days to mature. ofcourse there are billions of them. But according to Ayurveda, The sperms are related to eyesight. Too much of sperm wastage MAY affect the eyesight in long run.

Dunno about overdose of pornography. It is strictly emotional. Unless it is acompanied by vigorous masterbation, with very high frequency, these efects cannot be noticed.

Sex is good for prostrate glands. But Not too much of it.

Also, it may decrese the sex drive of an individual. Quote: Originally Posted by Jesse Are you saying this is a permanent effect, or just a short-term effect of too much sex in a given time period? It is easy to find the reference for these pathways. Refer to any Physiology book. I like Guyton’s physiology.

The effects that I described in my post are ofcourse temporary. However, I feel that the cumulative effect of these temporary effects adding up may result in long term implications. The body returns to its normal activity after some time of latency. However this latency period increases with time.

The second reason is purely psychological. Mind does get bored when any activity becomes a routine activity. A person who has too much of sex, it becomes a mechanical act for him. Hence the inclination to do that decreases with time. Mind is linked with brain. The decrease in sex drive is ofcourse related to brain.

Instead of treating a specific cell, it treats entire body. becoz According to Ayurveda, other parts of body cannot remain un-affected due to disease in one part. Hence it emphasises on treating whole body. The basic emphasis is given on Balance of everything.

Personally I’ve found that what Bundini Brown said was true (he was one of Ali’s trainers) to get an erection and not ejaculate can increase physical strength. How much it does so, depends at least on the body part. Hamstrings/gluts are greatly affected, personally, vertical leap can increase up to 6 inches with repeated stimulation without ejaculation over the course of a week or so. Deadlift can improve by 35%. (Went from 395 to 485) Finally ejaculated and then couldn’t do 405.
The idea of abstaining for men to improve physical activity only works if the man is still getting erections. Furthermore there is a delayed effect. You can have sex the night before the big game. It’s the next day that the body will have a marked decrease performance. Also the fluctuation in strength can vary for different body parts, and surely does for different people also. I agree with that. The pleasure is accompanied by sudden relaxation of muscles. To attain this sudden relaxation, it is essential that the body must be primed to extreme work and stress. Everybody who has had sex will agree that there is tremendous stress involved before reaching climax.

This stress sucks lotta energy. Ofcourse it is essential to maintain the good mindset. But over-sucking of energy is detrimental.

The effect on mind are quite different from the effect on body. After a healthy sex, a person feels fresh and relaxed. He finds the mind at peace. I have no idea that what are effects of over sex on health of mind. The only thing that strikes me is decrease in sex drive due to the mechanical nature of the act. Quote: Originally Posted by premjan Is it well documented that too much sex (e.g. overdose of pornogaphy/masturbation or sex with a high frequency) can cause an overdose of brain pleasure chemicals and affect normal brain function? Is this an argument against (too much) pornography? It would be an arguement if there were any real case presented.

Its a problem of people not understanding cause and effect. They see someone with a “sex addition” who had lots of sex, and assume that the sex is the cause, in spite of any scientific evidence!

A true “sex addict” is simply suffering from a specific Obsessive Compulsive disorder. OCD can take many forms. The common thread is that the need to do somethng is uncontrollable. The need will overcome any social or potential injury, the need becomes an imperative. When acted on the result is often described as intense near orgasmic relief. Probbaly the best account I can refer you to is an article written by David Sedairis about his compulsions from childhood through college. Anyway, this type of compulsion is the same regardles of if your brain is tellig you to lick the lightswitch, spin 23 times, or masterbate compulsivly. There are also varying degrees to the disorder ranging from debilitating to a minor annoyance (Ratey’s Shadow Syndromes is a great read).

Now, what are some causes? In children at least it has been shown that some forms of OCD are autoimmune problems associated with subclinical Step infections. The antibodies the body produces against the bacteria cross react with some proteins in the nervous system. a common treatment for children with OCD is a a throat culture and course of antibiotics. In adults it has to do more with GABAnergic systems rather than the dopamanergic systems inolved in addiction. With sexual desire you can also have a hormonal imbalance.

I don’t know of any credable study linking having frequent sex with becoming a “sex addict”. However because of cultural views when sexual activity is involved people make up all kinds of entertaining things.

In fact many studies show the exact opposite. Take a look at any psychological studies on women involves in the sex industry. many of which are addicted to other substances. You would think that they would be the most susceptable. But the end result is genreally sexual burnout and reduction of libido.

Anyway, here are the real things you need to worry about with sex and masterbation (in excess).

1- STDs. Even if in a regular monogomous relationship. Turns out that nearly 30% of reported cases of STDs in men may actually be caused by bacteria that is natural in some women’s mouths (medline iirc has a write up ont he article). Very low chance of getting the infection, but can happen to anyone.

2- Bruising, rugburns, etc. Use your imagination.

3- Blistering (if solo all the time, get some lube).

4- The very very rare very nasty stuff from accidents that involve a trip to the emergency room right away. (example, you can “break” an erect penis if bent with enough force.)

Other than that, don’t worry about it.

But wait a minute. Isn’t the whole idea behind health insurance – security? The financial security that comes from knowing that you’re covered if something goes wrong with your body? You say you’re covered, but what if your medical “situation” exceeds your policy limits? Then what?

No one wants that to happen, so the question is: are there other options? For instance, is there a way to “insure” against getting sick in the first place? Most people assume that’s not possible, but personally, I disagree.

Several years ago my wife Sandy and I stumbled onto a very unusual health product. We both had our own experiences with it and have seen it work miracles for others.

But before going there, I’d like to explain something. To me, health insurance should be about staying healthy. In China, for instance, doctors used to be paid only if they kept you healthy. That’s what I call real health insurance. And although the U.S. has some of the best-trained, dedicated physicians in the world, heart disease, cancer, strokes, and autoimmune diseases are all on the rise.

Clearly, our health isn’t being protected – at least not to an appreciable extent. The medical paradigm in the U.S. is mostly about treating symptoms, not fostering health. And while we’re all very grateful to doctors for all their efforts, symptom treatment is intrinsically short-sighted.

If symptom treatment was effective in restoring health, people would be getting well and staying well. But that’s not what usually happens.

There’s a growing movement of people who’ve recognized the shortcomings of the traditional medical/pharmaceutical “health” model. They’re not stupid. For instance: 106,000 annual deaths from properly prescribed prescription drugs sure got my attention when I heard the news. Check it out on the net. It’s a fact.

OK. So everyone knows there’s a problem. Again, the question is: are there options out there and if so, what are they?

As I was saying earlier, there is an option. I can say that because I have personal proof. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with a heart condition called atrial fibrillation. It wasn’t painful per se, but the irregular, spasmodic poundings inside my chest were very disconcerting.

My wife Sandy and I were in Maui when a friend of ours told us about something called glyconutrition. Now, I’m a fairly open-minded kind of a guy and I’ve been interested in health supplements for a long time, so I decided to try it. (By the way, nothing I was taking before then was helping my heart condition). After a few months, the condition went away. It hasn’t returned since.

Sandy also had a positive health reversal. She was in a lot of pain from neck surgery she’d had seven years earlier. She also decided to try the glyconutrients. It took a little longer for her, but her pain subsided and surgery was avoided.

My point in telling you these two stories is that we saved a ton of money and who knows how much pain and suffering by not having to undergo surgery. I don’t know if my atrial fibrillation would have led to a worsening condition requiring surgery, but I do know that Sandy was considering a second neck surgery before we heard about glyconutrients.

Since then, we’ve learned a lot more about the science behind glyconutrients and why this new category of nutrient is turning around so many health conditions for so many people.

Even highly trained medical doctors and surgeons are taking notice. Case in point: Dr. Ben Carson is the department head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. A severe form of prostate cancer led him to discover glyconutrients. Long story short: he attributes to them his complete recovery. He now recommends glyconutrients to all his patients, to his staff and others as well.

Without going into a lot of complicated detail, science now has a pretty good idea about why glyconutrients seem to be helping so many different kinds of health conditions. The bottom line is this: enhanced cell-to-cell communication.

Glyconutrients provide the body with highly specialized building blocks that the body transforms into communication molecules that all cells use. Without an adequate supply of these molecules, communication starts to break down and illness starts to creep in.

The reason glyconutritional supplements are so effective is this: our diets suck. Let me explain. If we got all the nutrients we needed in our diet, we’d rarely get ill. By the way, the scientific evidence to support that statement is huge.

But because 90 percent of the food we eat is processed (devoid of essential, health-promoting nutrients) and for a number of other reasons, we’re not getting the nutritional build blocks our bodies need in order to stay disease-free.

Bottom line: understand the powerful relativity between the nutrients we consume and the state of our health.

So to reiterate – there are options for warding off illness and medically related bankruptcy. Just don’t look for them in the current medical – pharmaceutical – health insurance paradigm. Look for them in the emerging science of glycobiology – the same science that’s starting to describe the cellular mechanisms behind the major health recoveries that thousands of glyconutrient users are now reporting.

David Lear is an independent nutrition researcher and free-lance writer. His main interest is in cutting-edge supplements that improve health and reverse illness.
