night. The hiding of vodka bottles throughout the house is maddening. I’ve attempted on too many occassions to remind her what life was like when I was drinking, but it just doesn’t appear to do any good. I’m in constant fear of failure, to say anything to her because it ususally leads to an argument. At present, from her last weekend binge, I finally moved out of the bedroom into the other one. Instead of her sensing that we might have problem, all she has been doing is drinking herself into a stuper. Don’t anyone have a good advice they can provide. I’ve been to ALA-NON and that just didn’t seem to work for me. I still take life “one day at a time”, but this is just getting unbearable. Its sad to see your wife, your mate, descend into such madness. I faced the same thing. I never had a substance abuse problem, and my wifes alcoholism was my first personal experience with the illness.
I have no good news. My marriage ended. She got her first DWI, sent her to rehab where she had an affair with a drunk she met while staying there. She got out, I found out about the affair, we split up, she got two more DWI’s, two totaled cars, broken limbs, detox…………now she has diappeared again with her rehab lover. She has shed her old life like a snake sheds its skin.
I will never understand how she could abandon her kids, but I learned to accept her being out of my, and my kids life, as a blessing. She was not getting better. I hope one day she will.
My advice? Your wife can only help herself. If it comes down between your life, your sobriety…..save yourself. It sounds cruel, but she has a choice to make. If she chooses life and goes to rehab, find an all womens facility. Maybe you can avoid what I faced.
Best wishes and prayers.
Evening, Baum. Are you hoping to find a way to convince your girlfriend to stop drinking or find just the right words to encourage her to get help? If you are, then you’ll surely be disappointed. As you’ve already seen for yourself, talking to an active addict in hopes of effecting a change in them is pointless.
And unless you enjoy sleeping alone, the only thing that sleeping in a separate bedroom will accomplish is no more fighting for the covers. It won’t help your girlfriend realize that she has a problem because she’s in deep denial about her drinking. So much so that she probably blames the bulk of her drinking on you.
Think back to the days when you were lost in your addiction. Did anyone have the power–through their words or actions–to make you stop drinking? You stopped drinking when you were ready, when it no longer served a purpose in your life, and when you were sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Many folks find that Alanon is a great outlet and a wonderful source of support. Did you attend one meeting or several meetings? Most folks recommend that you make a commitment to attend at least six meetings before you decide it’s not the right place for you.

On Saturday, I went to the pub for a post-ride beer.
After only 2 beers, I was finding it hard to keep my eyes open, and struggling not to fall asleep in my chair.
I attribute this to two separate issues.
Firstly I had, had an awful night’s sleep the previous night which culminated with my wife waking up with stomach pain at 4.30 am. I didn’t get back to sleep after that.
Secondly, I had been riding my bike for over 2 hours without ever topping up my carbohydrate stores. It would be reasonable to assume that my endogenous carbohydrate stores would have been depleted, and my blood glucose levels low. No doubt the intake of a couple of pints would have caused an insulin surge, which, once ceased, would have led to feelings of fatigue.
Funnily enough this happens to me every Friday night. I cycle home from work, and when I get home, I treat myself to a ‘Graze’ box which contain snacks full of natural sugars. An hour later my wife comes home to find me out for the count on the settee.
I left the pub (of my own accord) and started walking home, when I was challenged by a PC for appearing drunk. I told him, I wasn’t drunk, but tired, and that I lived a 10 minute walk away and wanted to go home and go to bed. I then started to walk off.
As I walked off the policeman shouted me back telling me not to walk off while he was talking to me. I turned round and calmly stated (didn’t raise my voice, swear or gesture) I had not broken any law and therefore he had no reason to be talking to me. Again I started to walk away and was shouted back. He said (aggressively) that he was in charge of the conversation and would decide when it was over. My response to this was that a conversation involves 2 people being involved in mutually consentual dialogue and that by definition nobody is in charge. I told him that the sort of dialogue he was referring to was an interview and, if an interview is what he wanted he would have to arrest me … but as he had nothing to arrest me for the discussion was over and I would be now be walking home. I should stress that during this time I never once swore, raised my voice or gesured aggressively.
As I turned to walk away he cuffed me and told me I was arrested. I asked what for and he replied ‘drunk and disorderly’.
On arrival at the police station I told them I was not drunk and would like to produce a sample of breath, blood or urine to prove it. This request was denied. Subsequently I asked for a container so that I could produce my own sample for independant analysis … in order that I could defend myself in court. This again, was denied.
I’ve made an official complaint to the police whose reply was that they don’t need a sample as it’s been passed by the courts that police officers are experts in subjectively judging the sobriety of an individual.
I find this incredulous. Why, if this is the case, do they need a sample to prove drink driving? What is the difference?
I was kept in the cell for 11 hours and despite requests, was not afforded an interview to put across my argument. When finally released, I was charged with drunk and disorderly. The reason as provided on the charge sheet was ‘when approached by a police officer, the offender became abusive’. I was not given a fixed penalty, instead I have to go to court in 2 weeks.
I’ve not yet spoken to a lawyer but from the research I have done on the internet, it seems that unless CCTV evidence is available (unlikely) … it will be my word against his and the magistrates will more than likely side with the police.
Just a comment on the first two answers here .. I really agree that I should get a solicitor .. unfortunately the cost might be too excessive.
Quizzard you couldn’t be more mistaken.
Belligerent suggestes that I was being aggressive/hostile. In actual fact all I tried to do was continuously walk away from a ‘hostile’ situation.
And also, surely the people I was out cycling with could testify that I had only had two drinks (not to mention the pub landlord)?
In the UK, Lisa.
I asked to speak to the duty solicitor at 6pm when I was locked up. I was allowed to speak to one, by phone, at 2am.
It’s not mandatory for them to conduct any test. Apparently it’s common law that police are experts in determing whether or not someone is drunk. That is evidence enough. In my opinion this fact is appalling, and leaves many ‘laws’ open to abuse.
i’m interested in applying for a handgun permit or license. nothing like a full carry but just something to be able to keep at home for protection. it seems like the world is getting more crazy with crime etc just want to be in a better position to protect my wife and kid if worst case scenario if something ever happened. here is the issue. i have no felony convictions however i have been arrested before for a dwi about 7 years ago and some open container tickets when i was a kid. the dwi i paid a fine and the open container tickets were when i was a teen and did community service. will any of this affect me when applying?

I’m going back to school for my bachelor’s degree.. my first choice is in Criminal Justice and want it to lead to CSI. I’ve always wanted to be in Law enforcement (following my father) but I was a little wild in my youth and made some mistakes (3 DWI’s back to back, the third is considered a felony.. this was 15 years ago).
Can I still become a CSI with out becoming a police officer and applying from w/in?
Now before you judge me to quickly.. please consider my felony was 15 years ago, I’m all grown up now, I don’t drink or even smoke and haven’t in a very long time (pretty close to just after that 3ed DWI). I’m also married and own my home. I consider my self a very responsible, honest and caring person.
So please don’t just post a big fat “NO” and dismiss me so quickly. Really just trying to make a big life decision…
Stuff to add: I have my license to carry firearms, I’ve considered the Army but my wife isn’t to keen on the idea
-thanks in advance =)
I can’t have a Mass felony expunged.. but I can have it sealed, I know sealing it wouldn’t help to become a police officer but do they dig just as deep for something like CSI?
